Refill L300 Inclinometer

For Delica L300 With Triple or Double Gauge Pod

This Guide will show you how to repair, re-seal and re-fill the OEM inclinometer with mineral oil. A common problem with these instruments is the backing plastic becomes brittle and eventually cracks. The mineral oil leaks out causing the instruments to bounce around, and eventually completely fail. If The inclinometer is still free and moves smoothly, then it can likely be repaired and refilled. if it is seized or clunky, then it is likely a lost cause.

Tools and Parts:

  • Plain Mineral Oil
  • Clear RTV (Silicone)
  • Super Glue
  • Denatured alcohol or high proof rubbing alcohol
  • Small Drill bit
  • Pinvice/ bit holder (Optional)
  • Lure Syringe with tip
  • Clear plastic (if backing is totally shot)

For this repair we will be using an inclinometer with a totally destroyed back.

You can see the totally shattered back cover plastic

1. Cut a new backing plate out of a clear plastic. I had a folder lying around, so I used that. It is important to use a clear or clearish plastic to carry the back-lighting.

2. Use the alcohol to thoroughly clean the surface of which the replacement plastic will be glued. It is important since mineral oil residue will prevent glue adhesion.
3. Glue in the the new plastic piece.

4. Allow the glue to dry completely and re-clean the surface with alcohol. Generously seal and fill the recess with clear silicone. It is important not to exceed the white plastic lip, or the silicone may hit the back of the gauge pod upon re-assembly.

This is an example of one repaired with silicone only since the cracking in the back plate was minimal and repairable. Same concept applied for a full backing replacement

5. Allow the Silicone to dry overnight. Using the pin-vice and small drill bit, carefully drill a hole in the original seal. This is usually a yellowish epoxy. If you look closely you can see the original fill bore through the clear plastic, it is best to try to align your new hole with this.

6. Using the syringe start to fill the inclinometer with mineral oil. You want to fill it as much as possible until the upper square reservoir only has a small air bubble. This will ensure that no air is visible during operation.

7. Once full, clean the fill hole and surrounding area with alcohol. This will ensure the silicone plug will stick.
8. Plug the hole with a dab of silicone.

9. Allow the plug to dry and place upright in a location where leak spotting will be obvious.
10. Once dry and leak checked, rinse the entire unit in alcohol and wipe dry. this will ensure that any residual miner oil will be removed.
